How to get your computer to display Asian characters

Something most people don't know. Do you get a box with some numbers in it wherever an Asian character (such as Japanese)? This thread tells you how to fix that problem.

Start -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language (Next to Quicktime mostly) -> Languages -> Install Files for Eastern Languages (Check Box)

Follow the rest of the instructions.

Well, on most modern computers they automatically install the software in order to display these characters. Computers that should be in a museum (like mine) do not.

My iPhone has all the characters as well. That was definitely a recent addition.

Those aren't characters, they are considered "Symbols." Most phones do not have the ability to use symbols, but some do. No phone can use every symbol available on the computer though, since there are far to many.

If you want to use symbols on a computer hold down the ALT key and hit a number on the number pad (usually on the righto f the keyboard).

Example:

ALT+1 = ☺
ALT+2 = ☻

You can also use multiple digit numbers in order to make a different symbol

Example:

ALT+10 = ◙
ALT+12 = ♀

There are also extended ALT codes which must be looked up most of the time in order to execute them properly.

Example:

ALT+0134 = †
ALT+0174 = ®
